3 Best Anime Games on Nintendo Switch in 2023
Nintendo has always been the company that brought obscure anime-inspired or licensed games to the west. With the release of their latest console, the Switch, this has reached new heights. Five years after its launch, it gathered an impressive roster of anime games, both exclusive and non-exclusive. Given the ease of playing handheld, it is no surprise that it has taken over the market by outselling the previous generation and completing with the new-gen hardware. Some of the best games available on the console are mentioned below.
Table of Contents
Figure 1. Pokemon Legends: Arceus
Platforms: Nintendo Switch
Pokemon is a series that has become a household name in recent years. This is primarily due to a generation growing up with the original Gen 1 games. But those same children have grown up, while pokemon has remained the same and unchanging statics. Pokemon Arceus sets out to remedy that and breathe new life into this beloved series. Arceus follows a trainer from the future being transported to the past, to a time when Sinnoh was just a new frontier for human expansion and was known as the Hisui region. You are then recruited to compile the first Pokedex by hand. This will have you travel the vast planes of Hisui and see the landmarks forming the region of Sinnoh.
The core system of the series catching and battling pokemon remains intact, but far more emphasis is placed on it. Some side mechanics are removed to focus more on the catching mechanic, which is far more involved and enjoyable as you have many ways to lure and weaken pokemon, so they are easy to catch. But the damage is around every corner as pokemon are not as docile as they are in the main games and will attack you the trainer, on some occasions. This system is easy for newcomers to learn, and veterans will find it a step in the right direction for the series, as its open world is arguably the best.
Figure 2. Neo: The World Ends with You
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch
Nowadays, video-games are moving from being gameplay-driven to story-driven, causing them to lose what made them unique in the first place. Very few of them try to balance story, aesthetics, and gameplay. Neo: The World Ends with You is one game that pushes to balance all the different components and pulls it off to give a unique experience. The story has us follow a duo of friends as they explore the crowded Shibuya and are pulled into an alternate world where they can use pins to unleash psychic powers. As they continue to discover what’s happening, they find themselves players in a death game against a monster called noise and other players. The narrative is slow to start but builds the world and characters so that you feel invested in them.
The combat resembles the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm or Dragon Ball Z games. You can equip different types of fashion pins to utilize different psychic abilities, from Pyro to Cryo, each with pros and cons. The powers have two types, standard and unique, which can be chained together with your partner’s character to deal massive damage. It requires you to have the skill to dodge enemies and use the exact type of attack o defeat some of the more difficult bosses. Each power and pin is based on a real-life clothing brand that helps build the world. It is a must-play for fans that want their games to have a defined art style and aesthetic.
Figure 3. Shin Megami Tensei V
Platforms: Nintendo Switch
In recent years, Shin Megami Tensei has been overshadowed by its spinoff Pesona. But fans still remember the series as it is considered by many the definitive JRPG. Shin Megami Tensei V has recently been released and finally given the admirers what they wanted after a long waiting. A narrative that delves into the core beliefs of man and what it means to be alive. It differs from the previous SMT games as it focuses on what technology does to faith and how it can be used to birth new beings. Compared to Persona, the side characters don’t play a massive role in the main story as they represent metaphysical concepts that the main protagonist can follow. Plot-wise, it is everything SMT admirers have wanted since SMT IV.
The core fighting happens through the tide and true press turn system, a staple of the series, and is considered by many the best pure turn-based system in an RPG. The game is by no means easy; as its spinoff, it gives you all the tools to create the best demon team and expects you to use it or else face defeat. The new features included sharing abilities between demons and unique fusion to create new demons. You will also have to explore the world’s four regions to find all the hidden equipment and player upgrade material. Finding demons’ weaknesses and exploiting them will be vital to surviving more brutal fights, but none of them are unfair as you can easily prepare beforehand. It is a must-play for anyone that wants a truly grand and thought-provoking narrative.
