5 Best Anime RPG Games 2023

Fiction has been something people have desired to be true for a long time. To leave behind their boring lives in favor of a new exciting one. DnD brought us closer to that with the power of imagination, and Anime has all but enhanced that feeling with worlds like Naruto’s or One Piece. That is also why Role Playing Games were and still are the favorite genre for many. But we have come a long way from the time of Ultima and 8-bit games. We now have some of the best RPG games, some of which are anime games, as mentioned below.

Table of Contents
  1. Disgaea 6
  2. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age
  3. Valkyria Chronicles 4
  4. Trials of Mana
  5. Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy
Disgaea 6

Platforms: (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5)

Many SRPGs nowadays always focus on a severe narrative like war and violence, yet they lack humor as it would clash with the nature of the game itself. This was the base concept for Disgaea, a series that hinges on having complex micromanagement systems and good strategic combat with a hilarious story and a wicked sense of Humor. The most recent game in the series Disgaea 6, is an amalgamation of everything that made the first five games, such cult classics and quality-of-life things that help the newer player get accustomed to the game's many mechanics.

The story sees us take control of Zed, a zombie that is out to take down a particular Demon Overlord; there is just one problem Zed is pathetically weak when he starts. But he has one ability that can help him close the gap, called super resurrection. It is a zenkai boost that applies when he dies. The story is not overly severe and has a light-hearted tone, but some moments of actual seriousness are sprinkled within. Combat is the tide and true Disgaea tactical turn-based one.

The mechanic surrounding it are the true highlights, such as leveling a character to 999999 and dealing a Trillion damage or lobbying for a change in in-game rules in the demon court. It is a game one must experience to understand truly. It is a must-play for any anime power fantasy fan.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Figure 2. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Platforms: (Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Nintendo 3DS, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows)

It is accurate to say that the times have changed, and the games which dominated the market are no longer than the industry juggernauts they once were. After the advent of PC gaming and Doom, the landscape changed to one led by turn-based combat to FPS-style games. But in market Dragon Quest still holds most of the market as it is one of the most beloved game series ever, and its recent entry Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age, shows that if executed, well even JRPGs have a place in the current market.

Dragon Quest XI’s story starts as generic as you can get; you are a village boy and are to set out to the local city castle to meet with the king. That is where the story and narratives change, spiraling into a tale of chosen ones, past mistakes, betrayals, loss, and hatred. It is supported by a well-written cast who play off each other to complete their character development. This, combined with the numerous plot twist, keep you on your toes. Combat is the sound old turn-based system that has been modernized with quality-of-life features and better visuals and animation. This also extends to the enemies, which have been beautifully recreated from the slime to the bone dragon. It is a must-play for any old-school games or anime fans.

Valkyria Chronicles 4

Figure 3. Valkyria Chronicles 4
Platforms: (Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows)

War has always been a two-sided conflict, but we rarely show the losers in a good light. For it is the winner that rights the story, Valkyria Chronicles has followed this as a base for its narrative since the first game.

The latest entry, Valkyria Chronicles 4, is a hallmark of that as we are shown a front of the Second Europan War, which was instrumental in the victory of the heroes of the first and third games in the series. The story follows Claude as he leads his troops through the enemy line and rugged terrain as they march for the Empire’s Capital. The path is not easy as they face tough resistance, lose comrades along the way, and have to use methods that do not sit well with their morality. It is a true tale of war and its effects.

The series’ combat is unique as it follows the basic tactical strategy framework, but the movement and unit attack differ. Each turn, you can use a command point to select a specific unit, this unit can attack once and move a certain amount. The same applies to every team with different roles, such as sniper or stormtrooper. The combat is easy to grasp, but it will take time to master all the little details. You can also fight against your friends online in local multiplayer. It is a must-play for any tactical anime fan.

Trials of Mana

Figure 4. Trials of Mana

Platforms: (Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows)

Recent years have seen a massive increase in remakes and remaster of old games, and one of the companies with the most extensive old game library is Square Enix, which has been leading the charge. We have seen many of Square’s games remastered, but very few were from the 16-bit era. That’s why it was a breath of fresh air that Trials of Mana was getting a remaster loyal to the source material.

Trials of Mana 2020 is one of the best action RPGs on the market right now. It is the exact combat of the 16-bit era, just adapted for a 3D gameworld with some quality-of-life features. Fighting feels swift and fluid because of its straightforward, snappy combos, immediate dodge-rolls, and easy access to upper moves. The character progression system merges the story with the combat, as you can play through six characters storyline. Each is a different class and can further change into other classes, which allows for much customization.

The plot of each playable character is different, but each has a larger underlying narrative that plays into the main story. This allows the characters to develop while interacting with each other and advancing the plot. It is by far the best remaster of a classic JRPG.

Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy

Figure 5. Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy

Platforms: (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows, Mac operating systems)

Gust has been making some of the most extraordinary alchemy stimulators with a JRPG twist for quite some time. Their most recent game Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy, shows they have perfected the systems and storytelling. Atelier Ryza 2 is a sequel to the first game, but the story is entirely different. We see Ryza set off on a new adventure and arrive in the city of Ashra-am Baird, where she meets old and new friends. Here she is also told about the ruins near, and she sets out to explore them and uncover what mysteries they hide.

The combat is the active turn-based system meaning that you will have to see the counter to check when your turn is coming and plan by that. You can use specific moves which either accelerate your turn or deaccelerate it. This synergizes with the alchemy system as you can craft complex items or massive damage-dealing consumables. But they are not free to make as you have to hunt for items in the world. This combination lets you focus more on the story, as no encounter feels overly tricky. That doesn’t mean the game is easy, as you must use tactics and strategy to deal with the massive boss enemies. It perfectly mixes story with combat and alchemy to deliver a fresh and unique experience.

I hope this article was able to help you find some fantasy games to play and enjoy this winter season. For more anime game-related content, stay tuned.
