Lol, someone posted "Why is this game dying? (an honest discussion)" on Eternal Return discussion board.
I looked into it, but most of them talks about what needs to be improved on game-side. Rather, my guess for fixing what is written there will be just little more population. Because, the core problem I see is rather a completely different subject: the anime graphic.
Lol, let me start with my answer to the topic first. I don't think this game is dying, but maintaining the game going somehow fine.
Eternal Return uses an anime graphic design. Although anime graphic is pretty generally and naturally accepted graphic in Asia, but in North America it's not.
Current population is probably already maximum population this game can get already as long as this game is implemented in anime graphic, although I am pretty sure this game still have good population as comparing to other multiplayer games that are in anime graphic.
And I highly think most anime gamers in America region play (here, it's not just "play", but "love to play") anime games on Japanese consoles such as PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. But this game isn't on those platforms.
Meanwhile, Genshin Impact has quite good population as it is confirmed by Twitch viewer count, and they released their game on:
Android
iOS
Microsoft Windows
PlayStation 4
PlayStation 5
Nintendo Switch
I wouldn't say mobile, but releasing anime graphic games on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation looks quite fundamental as the game is in anime graphic and there are many anime gamers on those consoles. A lots of my anime-related friends on PlayStation network do play Genshin Impact.
I understand the game uses many concepts of League of Legends for making competitive game, but if one targets anime fans who likes anime graphic then one will also need to do path taken by many many anime game companies.
Personally I would consider it as "miracle" if a game implemented in anime graphic can succeed without PlayStation release unless it is mobile game. This phrase has a weight.
So, do you think Eternal Return is dying? Personally, I don't think so. It's already doing fine.
