Figure 1. OSU!
Dedicated niche fandoms are something that the internet has always taken pride in, as it is responsible for their creation in the first place. Before the advent of the internet, these fans were separated by geographical and political boundaries, and well the second limitation has only grown the internet has all but removed the first one. A fact that can be easily seen if one looks at the OSU! community, as it is by far the most diverse and welcoming fandom to exist on the internet. While it may be a hyperbolic statement, it has a large amount of truth to it. As the OSU! community has gone through much evolution since its inception. This is due to the nature of the game and the way many heard of it the first time. To put it simply many of its fans were thought of as hardcore anime and gaming fans, and the difficult nature of the game also did not help the matter. But after COVID-19, it seems the community has started to turn its reputation around, a major feat and one that was in no small part aided by the popularization of its major esports tournament.

Yes, OSU! The so-called anime rhythm game has an esports tournament and it is by far one of the best community-run events ever. While it has changed its name many times, it is currently going by the name 7k OSU! Mania World Cup. Yeah, it isn’t your run-of-the-mill tournament no it’s the World Cup where players from a diverse community gather to find out who stands atop the rest. As for the 7K well it stands to represent two aspects, the format of the maps that will be played and the 7 keys that will formulate the bases of the the tournament.
Alongside this new name, the team over at OSU! has also made a few more changes since the previous year. These changes include the increase in the number of teams that can apply for the qualifier round, as in 2023 the limit was 16, but now it has been raised to 24. A decision that was taken by the team due to the increase in the players and the popularity of the tournament. Changes aside from this are smaller like changing specific rules for certain maps to make sure the playing field is even for everyone.
