Under Night In-Birth 2: Why This Sequel Will Dominate the Anime Esports Scene
Figure 1. Under Night In-Birth 2
If you have been part of the anime esports scene for some time then you are probably aware of the massive dominance one single studio has over this niche. Since most of the mainline games played by the masses are developed by them, this studio is the miraculous Arc System Works. And while it would not be false to say they saved anime esports from utter ruin, it is wrong of gamers to ignore the studios that have been a player on the scene for far longer. One such studio is French Bread the makers of the highly underrated Under Night in Birth. But with recent news, it seems like French Bread is about to make a bombastic comeback to the mainstream media's attention with the release of Under Night In-Birth 2 [Sys: Celes].
Under Night In-Birth
Before talking about the sequel let me first give you all some context to the previous game in the series and the one that set the foundation for French Breads Succes. Released back in 2012 Under Night In-Birth would gravitate players towards it with its epic storyline and music which could go toe to toe with the best of the best of the time such as Guilty Gear Xrd. But alas the game never gained a massive cult following due to the mechanics of the game being broken and downright exploitative at launch. Which is why the developers worked on the game meticulously and with every new release on a different platform the game would continue improving. Resulting in the best version of the game to be launched on Steam. This release was all it needed to become an indie hit, as the game would later go on to be featured in multiple tournaments such as Combo Breaker, CEO, and EVO Championship.

Despite its recent popularity we still need to accept the fact that the game is old as many of the most popular and groundbreaking fighting game mechanics were not even conceived of in 2012. There is also the matter of the roaster being one of the smallest, and while size doesn’t always correlate with good in fighting games it is better if you have a wide variety of characters and styles to pick.

Which is exactly why the recent unveiling of the sequel on the first day of EVO 2023 left fans not only shocked by also hyped for the new release as it is going to be playable as early as the first quarter of 2024. Many new features were also promised such as the Celestial State and Creeping Edge. Alongside these new features, French Bread has also promised fans that the game will have the complete roaster of the previous games, new networking code courtesy of Arc System Works, updated move sets, new character specials, and much more. So if you have been a fan of the Under Night In-Birth series then get ready for a sequel that will revolutionize not only the series but also the gaming landscape.
