Square Enix is a big name in the gaming industry. Even if you are a casual gamer, chances are you have heard about Square Enix. This gaming company is the developer of the top-notch, effectively one of the best RTS military games: The DioField Chronicle! Released in 2022, The DioField Chronicle is available to play on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and Steam.

Given its support for a wide array of platforms, The DioField Chronicles basks in the glory of having a big player base. This is because The DioField Chronicles accomplishes what no other military game could have achieved. Speaking of which, this real-time strategy game is set in a fictional medieval world that perfectly fuses the elements of fantasy and modern times.

So much so, that the final result is a completely new military simulation RPG. The game’s real-time tactical battles pits players against time to accurately judge the situation on the battlefield and as such give precise order.

Each unit in the game has unique characteristics, depending on their class, skills, and the weapon equipped, which further opens up the room for more tactical approaches in real-time battles. In the game, you command the elite band of warriors set out to right the course of the future!

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

You can think of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim as the complete but opposite reflection of The DioField Chronicles. Where the former took you into a medieval era, this game by Vanillaware takes you into the future, making you travel through a century of space-time, all the way from the 1980s to the 2100s! It is currently only available on PS4 and Switch platforms.

What makes 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim one of the best RTS military games is its unique approach to gameplay. In that, 13 Sentinels delivers 3 distinct gameplay experiences divided into Remembrance, Destruction, and Analysis. As the name suggests, players take control of 13 different protagonists throughout the game and make some crucial decisions along the way which alters the outcome of some scenes.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a rich cocktail of 2D side-scrolling platform, action-adventure gameplay, and top-down real-time battles. In the game, you battle against the enemy Kaijus that come in various types thus requiring a different way to take them down. Even the Sentinels you control have specific abilities; with some being good at taking down aerial foes while some deal massive damage to ground-based enemy units.

In a nutshell, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim provides a distinct military-style gameplay experience that words cannot just describe enough. One has to play the game in order to fully relinquish what it has to offer.

Unconventional Warfare

Don’t let Unconventional Warfare’s last position on this list deceive you into doubting its potential as one of the best RTS military games to play in 2024. As of writing, this game is currently in development and nothing much is known about it. Developed by Nightlife Strangers in 2022, Unconventional Warfare is currently available in early access via Steam.

As per its Steam page, Unconventional Warfare is a top-down RTS game that is set in the World War I era. Unlike the other two games on this list, Unconventional Warfare does not deliver fictional or futuristic gameplay. In fact, the game does a much better job at recreating World War I scenarios which players, who are fans of the historical warfare, would absolutely love to play.

Although an indie game, Unconventional Warfare boasts a compelling lore. It is set in the region of Andarushia where corruption and decades of instability have plunged the nation into a civil war. Where the world has turned a blind eye to this nation, you find yourself crash land in Andarushia. Now, left with only a handful of survivors, you must utilize your expansive military knowledge and escort the survivors to safety! Is this something you can do?
