Console Wars is a name every 90s to 2000s kid knows all too well. It is responsible for sowing the great seeds of chaos in the gaming community. But before these wars, gaming used to be a simple thing. As many personal computers came loaded with games, that kickstarted the love many players have for it now.  A love that has only grown due to the advancement in technology, and with the advent of Steam PC gaming has never been better. Case and point the RTS genre, which is one of the only few genres still primarily found on PCs. Contrary to what console players would have you believe these genres have only gotten better over time, as can be demonstrated by the following best RTS games of 2024 for the computer.

RTS computer games trace their legacy back to the early days of choose-your-own adventure-type games. But according to many, it wasn’t until the release of Age of Empires and StarCraft did the genre reached mainstream popularity. And while nowadays they might be seldom remembered their legacy lives in the games they inspired. Games like The Touhou Empires by the developers Neetpia, who have chosen to bring a modern age twist to the classic formula. All the while keeping the integrity of the core gameplay intact, which they accomplished by smooth-lining the macro strategy of managing bases alongside the micro one of controlling hundreds of troops. Not only that the advancement in technology has now allowed for even better real-time strategic combat with the inclusion of better enemy AI and more factions to play as. As for the narrative, the developers have promised it will follow a story closely linked to the mainline Touhou games to ensure authenticity. So if you wish to witness the rebirth of a classic genre then The Touhou Empires is the game for you, it is also a Steam exclusive.

To say the early 2010s were a bad time for RTS fans would be an understatement as the genre has seen a comeback only in recent years. But through those dark days, a few developers stuck to their guns and kept on creating RTS games despite their relatively low sales. Developers like PROJECT YNP and games like Star Maidens Chronicle: Definitive Edition. Who even despite it all, managed to keep the spirit of the genre alive. And why wouldn’t it as the game is a perfect rendition of everything good about RTS games? The Definitive Edition adds even more content, including new units, new maps, and a few new faction-specific units. Combat wise the game lets the players control large units and employ different tactics to defeat their foes and secure victory. So what are you waiting for there are a few games that have survived against all odds and live to tell the tale. It is also an exclusive on Steam.

Lost Technology

Last on the list we have a game that came out at the start of the RTS revolution and to this day is still getting updated with new factions and gameplay mechanics. This game is none else than Lost Technology developed by Studio 4D. On this list, it is the only game to not be inspired by the classics, but rather it traces its roots to the SRPGs of the late 90s. What supports this point is the beautifully hand-drawn art and animation of the characters, alongside the combat. Which is more macro-heavy, as you will control countless armies and units on a massive map. The objects of each map are also quite varied and change based on the faction you are playing. Factions that are getting updates and new additions to this day, allow players to keep on experimenting with new and bolder strategies. So what are you waiting for get Lost Technology now on Steam as it is an exclusive there.
