Anime fighting games have been a staple in the gaming industry for decades, offering fans of both anime and gaming a chance to experience their favorite characters in intense, action-packed battles. As we head into 2025-2026, there are a few upcoming anime fighting games that have caught the attention of gamers worldwide. It’s not every day you get to see an all-female fighting game. If such a niche genre appeals to your interests, then behold BattleQueen; an upcoming anime fighting game in 2025 by a solo developer that goes by the name ix9. Being an indie title, the game is currently scheduled to be released on Windows only.

BattleQueen is not an ordinary anime fighting game. While the core combat mechanics are largely the same as in games like GGS and DNF Duel, BattleQueen boasts some of its own unique features like paper flattening animations. Each character is unique and has its own movesets and combo finishers. The decent yet flashy visuals help to add.

While still in early access, we’ve got good news. You can test out BattleQueen by downloading its beta version which is available on the developer’s official site. The trade-off? You only get access to 4 characters and would need a partner to test this game out since there is no enemy AI yet. And yes, did I mention that there is no sound in the beta version?

Touhou Dream Duel

Touhou Dream Duel is yet another upcoming anime fighting game. It is currently being developed for PC gamers by ALICE in 幻想LAND, an indie developer whose only presence is on Steam.

Touhou Dream Duel is a fan-made classic 2D anime fighting game set in the fictional world of Gensokyo. One of the highlights of this game is complete freedom in deck-building customisation. In that, you get to select your own special moves, spell cards, and even system cards, so that even if there are two same characters in a fight, their moveset will be completely different!

Touhou DD draws heavy inspiration from other games in the series. One notable game is Touhou Hisoutensoku. The Dream Duel fan project copies the weather manipulation and deck-building system from this game, but with several improvements that give players more control rather than being subjected to randomness.

I personally recommend this game to every fan of the Touhou universe. Not only are there unique moves in addition to original ones, but there is also a more refined implementation of the rollback netcode that makes online matches super realistic!

HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT

Yet another game on our list of upcoming anime fighting games is HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT. It is a 2D fighting game that is co-developed by Bushiroad Games and Arc System Works. It is all set to be released on PlayStation 5, Nintendo, and Windows via Steam this July 2025.

As the name suggests, HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT is based on the hit anime “Hunter X Hunter” and makes use of Nen abilities that are unique to each character in this 2D fighting game. Speaking of which, there are a total of 16 characters on the roster that the game will launch with.

Each HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT character has a distinct playstyle, and the order of your teammates that you choose also matters a lot for pulling off combos mid-fight. Season 1 of HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT will further introduce 4 new characters from the series.

What I particularly like about HUNTER×HUNTER NEN×IMPACT is that there are several gameplay modes available to play. From single-player and story mode to online PvP and the Training mode, there is a wide variety to choose from.

Varvarion

Varvarion is an upcoming video game developed by a small indie studio called Polygonomicon. The game is set to be released in 2023 to windows, and it promises to offer players a unique blend of fighting and arena combat. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where players take on the role of a tribal leader trying to survive and thrive in a harsh and dangerous environment. Varvarion boasts a rich and immersive world, with an intricate lore and history that players can discover as they progress through the game. The game features a variety of environments, from barren deserts to lush forests, each with its unique set of challenges and opportunities.

One of the most interesting features of Varvarion is its combat system. The game combines strategy with action-packed battles, allowing players to engage in intense battles that require both strategy and skill. We have Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO by Spike Chunsoft on the list which is yet another upcoming anime fighting game as of writing this article. Scheduled to release on October 11, 2024, this latest instalment in the Dragon Ball game series will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows platforms.

Like other upcoming anime games on this list, Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO promises great improvements and overhauls over the previous Dragon Ball games. In particular, fans of the franchise will be able to experience the iconic DB action in its most realistic form all the while staying true to the source.

By this, I mean that Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO will introduce big visual overhauls that will make you reimagine the classic DB action from the ground up. You will also get to experience the original DBZ storyline from the perspective of 8 characters, including Goku, Vegeta, Tien, and Krillin.

While online PvP will indeed be available, what’s more important is that you upgrade your rig if you haven’t in the long run. This latest game has no particular requirements yet but it’s safe to say that it will take a toll on your system and run poorly in the PvP arena.

NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS

NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS is an upcoming anime fighting game that is set to be released in late 2023 on all major platforms for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo to Windows. This game is the latest installment in the popular Ultimate Ninja Storm series and is being developed by CyberConnect2, the same team that worked on previous games in the series. As the name suggests, NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS brings together characters from both the Naruto and Boruto series, offering fans a chance to play as their favorite ninjas from both generations. The game promises to have an extensive roster of characters, including fan favorites like Naruto, Sasuke, and Kakashi from the Naruto series, as well as Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki from the Boruto series. They have also teased the introduction of other classic characters such as Indara and Asura. The new story is also bound to introduce new faces to the roster.

The game is being developed by Cygames, the same team behind the previous Granblue Fantasy Versus for PlayStation and Windows. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising boasts a diverse roster of characters, each with their unique fighting styles and abilities. The game features characters from the Granblue Fantasy RPG, including Gran, Katalina, and Lancelot, as well as new characters created exclusively for the game.
