7 Best Anime RTS Games 2024

Strategy is a name that has been synonymous with games since the days of faking out your opponents in pong. And with the advancement in technology, it has only gotten more integral. Much of this has resulted in the creation of a new genre entirely dubbed the RTS genre, which has grown in popularity since the early 2000s. But with the ever-changing nature of the games industry, the genre has changed significantly from the early days of tactics ogre and fire emblem to the modern reimaginings. Some of these reimagining that also happens to be the best of 2024 are listed below.

Table of Contents

  2. The Touhou Empires
  3. The DioField Chronicle
  4. Touhou Monster TD

Platforms: Windows.

Developed by PROJECT YNP, Star Maidens is one of the if not the most accurate games to the definition of RTS as established by the Age of Empire or StarCraft series, and oh boy is it a good one. Based in a feudalistic Japan, western-style, futuristic-style, or even fantasy-style nations where special maidens live who have the ability to perform great acts of magic, you will take control of one of the many nations and fight the reamning in order to gain control over the land. With a modern and revamped RTS system that gives priority to resource management and strategic unit placement. All in all the game is a phenomenal experience for anyone who wants to witness the glory days of RTS with a fresh new coat of paint and also avoid having their base over run by zealot monks who will convert your units till the last villager.

The Touhou Empires

Platforms: Windows.

It happens to be a game that already is causing quite a stir in the gaming community as it was recently nominated for the Steam awards. It is none other than the perfect mash-up between the ruthless strategies of RTS and the out-of-this-world nature of Touhou, it is The Touhou Empires. An attempt by the studio Neetpia to bring this game series into a whole new genre, and from the above-mentioned hype and fame it seems that they have succeeded in their endeavors. Gameplay-wise the game will follow a to-the-book RTS format, which might be similar to veterans of the old Age of Empire games. It will have set factions mirroring iconic series factions and will also try to flesh them out more via the unit and building description. As for the narrative of the game, it seems like the developers are still keeping that under wraps. But from the few hints we have gotten we can easily assume that this game will somehow flow into a main-line Touhou game but which one it will be is not known at the moment. But all of the current information can assuage the fear of the fans, as the Touhou series is no stranger to quick cash-grab spin-offs. A path Neeptia is doing everything in its power to avoid and it seems it is working. So if you wish to experience this established series forte into the unknown then this game is for you.

The DioField Chronicle

Platforms: PlayStation, Switch, Xbox, and Windows.

Square Enix is a name that is known far and wide for its advancements in the JRPG and RPG genre with games such as the highly coveted Final Fantasy Tactics and  Dragon Quest series. But now they seem to be changing up their game by stepping into the RTS genre with the release of The DioField Chronicles. Set in a fantasy land where the age of myth has long passed and man has seen to it that he follows his greed rather than honor. Leading to an era of great turmoil and war where the cries of the innocent are snuffed out by the marching legions. At this time of great upheaval, a new band of mercenaries enters the fray, calling themselves the Blue Fox they claim their ambitions to end this era of war and bring about a new dawn of peace. While their hearts remain true it will only be time that will tell whether their arrival was the glimmer of hope or the warning bells of darkness. The DioDield Chronicle also boasts a new and improved real-time strategy system that manages to blend macro-level army management seamlessly with micro-level unit management. And despite the slight hardware issues the game acts as a perfect starting point for fans of RPGS wanting to start a whole new genre.

But not just any old run-of-the-mill anime MIMARU holds the distinction of being one of the very few hotels that are officially linked to the Pokemon Company. This results in them having a full Pokemon-themed room, where the first thing that will greet the guests is a giant Snorlax Plushie. Alongside that, the room features multiple different Pokemon-themed items ranging from curtains to even scented candles, which somehow can evoke the feeling of nostalgia. But don't let it all fool you into believing it's just a simple cash grab as it offers multiple high-quality food options that can even be customized if the guest is allergic to certain items. So the next time you happen to wind up in Tokyo why not give MIMARU Tokyo Ueno East a try as it is an experience you will not forget anytime soon.

Touhou Monster TD

Platforms: Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Touhou is a name that has cemented itself in the annals of gaming history as one of the most eccentric and crazy gaming series ever. From bullet hell shooters to Metroidvanias the series is known to have a game for every genre, that also included the RTS genre. But in true Touhou style it's not just a simple RTS game it is a mash-up of tower defense, RPG, and RTS. Now it might sound weird at first, but once you start playing the game you will be swept away by the gorgeous graphics and catchy soundtrack to only be brought down by the insane difficulty of the game. As it requires you to not only be proficient with the core game mechanics but also be ready to change your strategy on the flip of a hat. But rest assured the game will give you all the tools you need to succeed and destroy all 60 unique enemies that will besiege you wave upon wave. So if you are in the market for a game that manages to merge the wacky difficulty of the bullet hells with the slow tactical combat of RTS.

GrimGrimoire OnceMore

Figure 5-1. GrimGrimoire OnceMore

Platforms: PlayStation, and Switch.

First on the list, we have a game that in recent years has seen a reemergence from its occult status due to a modern remake. The game in question is GrimGrimoire OnceMore, the joint creation of Vanillaware and Nippon Ichi Software. The former of which was the main developer and the latter was responsible for the localization. At its surface, the game starts as a high fantasy adventure with witches, mages, and a school for the gifted. But where it differs from its Harry Potter inspiration is the combat section of the game as it turns into a glorious union between the fluidness of 2D side scrollers and the tactical genius of RTS. A feat since the release of the game only few have been able to pull off, and even then it was not to the extent of the original. This is why even to this day there is a dedicated fan following of the game, and the perfect reason as to why you should play the game. Because in all the glory of RTS, few games are like GrimGrimoire OnceMore.

Lost Technology

Figure 6-1. Lost Technology

Platforms: Windows.

Following the previous entry the next game on the list is one that wears its inspiration on its chest. It is none other than the Lost Technology made by Studio 4D, and oh boy what a game it is. While a bit dated in the graphics section due to its 2017 release the game gets frequent updates which shows the developers have not abandoned the game. A fact that becomes clearer the more you play, as the game is an RTS with a massive scope. For you will command thousands of soldiers from simple infantry to powerful generals. All the while using every last brain cell to figure out the best strategy to win the battle and the war. As for the narrative of the game, it is perfectly integrated into the combat. Each faction and its generals tell a small contained story that will require you to have the perspective of all the players to understand. Death is also depicted in the game as a statistic in the real-time battles to show the honest brutality of war. So if you wish to witness the merger of Total War in Age of Empire with great strategy then Lost Technology is the game for you.

Unconventional Warfare

Figure 7-1. Unconventional Warfare

Platforms: Windows.

Depiction of war in the entertainment media has changed drastically over the years, as we have gone from having a reverence for them to wishing another one would start soon. But one aspect of war that has never changed is loss, a concept that becomes the foundation of a certain game and its world. This is due to the dackdrop and the setting, as we have found ourselves miles away from any kind of help. And stranded with all but a couple of survivors deep within enemy territory. As for the gameplay, it is mostly inspired by the Valkyrie series, with the only difference being the use of real-time combat and the control of multiple units. In the modern landscape of RTS games Unconventional Warfare stands as a testimony of war and how easily we can end the lives of countless innocent people with no remorse at alll. So what are you waiting for the game is only available on the Steam online web store.
