Pokémon is a franchise that needs no introduction, not only is it one of the biggest media IPs in the whole world it also is the only franchise whose games despite being buggy and unfinished sell like hotcakes. Much of this can be attributed to its diverse fanbase, ranging from children who are playing the games for the first time, to seasoned veterans who have either gone the esports route or the fan game creation route. Dismissing the legality of the latter many people need to understand that the esports of the Pokemon games are no joke. The time and dedication needed for the tournaments is Ludacris. Not only do you have to make sure your team composition is on the mark, but you also have to make sure that the Pokémon you have chosen for the current tournaments are viable in the meta of the game and do not fall into the banned list. An easy process you might say if you have not reset the game for the 1 thousandth time just to make sure the IV’s distribution is good and the nature is something that can be used. And you must repeat this for all six Pokémon.

So suffice it to say the esports of the Pokémon games while being one of the biggest draws for sponsors and organizers is a massive time-sick already for players. However, in recent years Nintendo has taken steps to ensure that the lives of the esports players are made better. This was achieved by adding specific facilities into the game that allow players to change natures, abilities, and yes to a certain extent IV’s. Changes were loved by the community as it allowed them to shorten their preparation times for teams, but the new generation also brought with it new problems. New Pokémon meant that meta changed once again and the Pokémon that were powered before got nerfed. A scenario in Generation 9 was thankfully quite rare as compared to the massacre that was the Gen 6 Fairy update. But now with the current rumors coming from the early reports of the Indigo Disk DLC, it seems generation 9 might be seeing some major changes soon.

According to reports and the recent trailer that was released starter Pokémon from all previous regions will be made available for all to catch and use freely. While quite good news for the fans of said Pokémon we need to keep in mind these are heavily overused Pokémon in the meta and for a good reason. They have a higher stat total than most Pokémon, though a downside to this is the fact they are notorious for being hard to catch outside of scripted events. Another thing that was showcased was the moves to be added into the game and each of these moves has a secondary effect that is tailor-made for meta play, from the heal block of Psychic Noise to Thunder Clap’s priority above all. The last thing that was shown in the brief trailer and confirmed by early reports is the all-new Terastallization which will allow certain Pokémon to use the new Legendaries' power to become an amalgamation of all the types. A feature that has the power to completely break the meta of the VGC. For now, it is only confirmed to be linked with the new legendary Pokémon, but based on how the previous 3 DLC Pokémon turned out it seems it will be no different this time around. But alas only time will tell the results of the new changes and the new abilities, fortunately, we will not have to wait for long as the DLC is just around the corner.
