3 Best RTS Games for Beginners 2024
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that in the modern day and age of fast data, our attention spans have shortened to a dangerously low level. But if we were to only take a look back to the 90s we could see the near-god-like attention span of people, especially gamers. It also isn’t a surprise this was also the age where RTS games thrived as they alongside MOBA require the most attention as the player has to take into account multiple moving parts of the match and then has to plan how to deal with them all. But that isn’t to say RTS games can't be played by beginners as the following are the best launch pads for players wanting to explore the RTS genre.
Table of Contents
Figure 1-1. The Touhou Empires
Touhou and bullet hell are two words that were created for each other, as the series has managed to carve its niche in the game industry with unforgettable experiences and even can out-challenge the likes of FromSoft's best games. But this immense challenge and isolated genre are also the shackles that bind the game. Or so was the case until developers Neetpia took on the impossible of adapting the game to a completely different genre. A genre that in the eyes of many is long past its glory days but due to the dedication of a few fans still holds onto relevance. The genre is RTS and the name of the game that Neetpia is developing is Touhou Empires. Many of the keen-eyed among you might have already deduced the source of the name, as the game according to the developers is inspired by the like of Age of Empires. A true classic of its time alongside StarCraft, but unlike those games Touhou Empires makes one crucial change. It is more geared towards new players to the genre as a whole, rather than the veterans that run amock in the lobbies of the aforementioned classics. So if you wish to join the world of RTS games then this is the best starting point for you, as it is also easily accessible on any Windows system.

Secondly, we have a game that instead of taking a few bits of inspiration from older titles simply does the most logical thing. That is the adaption of the entire system from the older RTS titles in the 21st century with all the bells and whistles attached. This game is none other than Star Maidens Chronicle: Definitive Edition, which is being developed by Project YNP. As mentioned above the developers have made some much-awaited changes to the genre, such as adding new tabs to ensure better macro and micro-management, they have also implemented new AI systems to ensure that the players are kept vigilant at all times. As for the graphics the game features a blend of modern technology with old-school Japanese aesthetics. As for the story it serves its role of providing a believable and realistic backdrop for the game to take place. Alongside all these improvements the game has been designed with new players in mind to ensure that everyone with a tactically sound mind has an equal chance to win. It is also an exclusive on Windows.

Last on the list we have a game that is not as well known as the rest of the games on the list, nor does it take inspiration from older classics. It is a wholly unique and new idea, where the developers of Magic Cuisine thought to merge three different genres, and surprisingly instead of it being an unplayable mess, it turned out great. The game in question is Crystania Wars 2, a simple RTS game that uses different mechanics from the Tower Defense and Survival genres. A weird combination for sure but one that covers the shortcomings of the other, leading to gameplay that feels just right, as the micro-management needed in the game is quite low as compared to the overall macro management that interlinks perfectly with the recurring waves to enemies. All of this creates a perfect game loop, that is also beginner friendly causing the game to be perfect for players looking to dabble in the RTS genre. It is also a Windows and Android exclusive.
