4 Best Anime Card Games 2024

People have been using cards since the 8th century to play and communicate with each other. This led to some of the most iconic games ever, but that changed in the mid-80s when games like Magic the Gathering started to come out and created a separate market. A market that leads to creating card games like the iconic Pokemon and Digimon Card games and, arguably, the foremost popular of them all, YU-GI-OH! Which remains going strong to this day.But this format was also modernized as now you can play card games online. Some of the anime card games are mentioned below.

Table of Contents
  1. Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel
  2. Kamigami: Clash of the Gods
  3. Shadowverse CCG
  4. Heart of Crown

Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel

Figure 1. Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel

Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Android, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, iOS, Microsoft Windows, Xbox Series X, and Series S.

Yu-Gi-Oh! was a name beloved in the playgrounds as all the children of the 2000s used to play either this or Pokemon card game. With the massive success of the anime and spinoffs, it continued to evolve and soon created entire leagues and meta for people to duel it out. This also gave rise to many games, but none were able to recreate the feeling of dueling with real people, but that now changes with the sudden release of Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel. One of the most polished and feature-rich anime card games out there. It recreated the game’s current meta and gave the fans exactly what they wanted.

It is an online PvP-based game, and it executes it to perfection. The game's rule set follows the international version, and it also does some of its own alterations to ensure all the players are getting a fair experience. The graphics are also cut above the rest as they animate many of the cards and have their splash arts play as they attack. All the while, the soundtrack helps immerse the players. The game also introduces a level course where the players are given a crash course of the monster card types and some basic strategies to get them started.

Some rare cards can also be collected, and the mechanic for getting cards is also a player-friendly one, as you can choose which specific subset or type of cards to get. And with the game being free, you and your friends can also duel it out. It is truly a must-play for any card game or anime enthusiast.

Kamigami: Clash of the Gods

Figure 2. Kamigami: Clash of the Gods

Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Linux, macOS, and Mac operating systems.

Kamigami: Clash of the Gods is a super-faced paced card game that emphasizes card placement and short-time victory more than long-term strategies. When you start up the game, the first thing that will greet you is undoubtedly the beautiful art style. It is an anime-based one, and all the game characters are drawn in it. It features characters from three different mythologies, including the Greek, Norse,d Japanese, and most characters are anime girls, including the head of the Greek pantheon Zeus.

The game takes place on an animated and region-themed board, and the cards are divided into five types. The first and the most important are the Hero cards which you will always play first and build the rest of the deck around. Creatures and Deities are the cards that will be deployed the most and can be moved and used to attack. Monuments are stationary cards that help you passively, and Miracles are spells that help you turn the tables on your foe. This results in a faced-based battle where your cards generate devotion, and you use it to finish the struggle by attacking relentlessly.

One of the major draws of the game is that there are no loot boxes or micro-transactions. You can get new cards by fighting in the campaign or online battles and getting the cash required to buy and open card packs. You also can take part in offline actions to keep your skills sharp and enjoy the extra lore. Kamigami feels like a natural evolution of the card game genre and is must play for any of the older fans of the genre to see how it has evolved.

Shadowverse CCG

Figure 3. Shadowverse CCG

Platforms: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Mac operating systems.

Shadowverse CCG is one of the biggest names in the card game genre, and for being free to play, it is one of the best polished and high-production game on the market right now. Cygames developed it, a studio known for producing great fun games in the east and porting them over to the west when it has been fine-tuned to perfection. Shadowverse is the same. It features a fully animated story with cutscenes and additional lore, which helps give context to some of the wacky cards. On the topic of cards, it features a boatload of cards, each with unique splash art and animation for a skill. They also have different designs if you use the evolve mechanic on them.

Combat is the main bread and butter of the game. It is a rendition of the system made famous by Heartstone, where you have a deck of 40 and place five cards on the battlefield. It is a slow and methodical game requiring you to set up strategies in advance and, in some scenarios, sacrifice your cards to gain a better position. Each card has a set amount of life points and attack power. They can also be bettered in battle by using the evolve mechanic. You can upgrade any cards in play with the evolve mechanic on every fifth turn. This makes it so they double the damage and have twice the life points. New cards are gained by interacting with the gacha mechanic, and you can also get SR cards, usually by playing through the story mode and doing the game's side activities.

Shadowverse CCG is one card game with great mechanics and eye-catching art that will have you and your friends playing it for hours.

Heart of Crown

Figure 4. Heart of Crown

Platforms: Microsoft Windows

Heart of Crown is a mix match of different genres with the main focus of cards, and it just works. You, as the player, have one goal in the game: to back a princess in the empire to take control. You play it against three other players. The game’s concept may seem outlandish and weird, but as you start to play, you get lost In the mix of city building and plotting against your political opponents. Each princess you can back has been drawn in a beautiful art style faithful to the source material, which is a crowd-funded Japanese card game. The main draw may be the online battles, but you can spend hours in the versus mode testing game plans and making the best-optimized deck.

The battling is a mix of base building and managing your resources, such as gold, to ensure you can influence the imperial landscape. While doing this, you will have the choice to choose between multiple princesses. Each has a different backstory and motives while also giving a specific buff that can turn the tides of battle in your favor. You can use the gold you earn while placing down the cards to purchase more specialty cards which will either help you grow your resources or grant card-specific actions such as a unit attack and disruption of supply chains. From the humble beginning of crowdfunding, Heart of Crown has become one of the most easily accessible anime card games on the market.

I hope this article was able to help you find an anime card game to play and enjoy this winter season. For more anime game-related content, stay tuned!
