3 Best Anime Horror Games in 2024
Anime is a medium that has slowly been bleeding into pop culture, and recently, with high-budget anime, it has finally become mainstream. With this, some older aspects have been forgotten to appeal to the broader demographic. The most affected is horror, as no horror anime like the 80s and 90s have come out in recent memory. But there is where anime games come into play. After the indie revolution, many have gone to make anime horror games, and below are just a few of the best anime horror games you can play right now and fulfill that horror craving.
Table of Contents
Figure 1: Omori
Platforms:- (macOS, Microsoft Windows, Switch, Xbox One, Series X/S, and PlayStation 4)
Horror is of many kinds. Some are easily scared by sudden jump scares, and some will remember meeting someone mysterious in a dark alleyway as true terror. That’s why when you first open up Omori, you might feel that all the warnings it gave were probably a mistake or a joke. Omori feels as if it’s a long-lost RPG from the SNES and Sega generation. It has beautiful hand-drawn visuals; even the aspect ratio graphics help cement this.
You start as Omori, a child who has become a recluse and mute following an event in his life. You wake up in a white room and are soon met by some of your friends, the ones with color, while you lack it. You are then taken on an adventure in a beautiful world filled with color and mystical creatures where the plants talk and there is sentient cheese. The combat in the game is like a modified version of Nintendo’s acclaimed Earthbound series. You use real-life items and moves to combat the enemies.
As you go on this adventure, small cracks start to appear, and soon you see the world for what it truly is. That is where the story and narrative pick up steam, and you witness an experience truly best enjoyed blind. But do heed the game’s warning, as it is a genuinely great psychological horror that will no doubt leave an everlasting impression upon you. It is a must-play if you love anime or horror, and doubly so if you are both.
Figure 2: Tokyo Dark
Platforms:- (Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, macOS)
The point-and-click genre has seen a slow death recently, as it didn’t have another medium to fall back on like the visual novel genre. But what happens when you mix point-and-click with a dark horror visual novel set in a neon city? You get Tokyo Dark. It is a perfectly moody and atmospheric game that relies on narrative story choices and their consequences to move the plot and narrative. Its blend of the 80s and 90s aesthetics also gave a good backdrop for the story to play out.
You take on the role of Ayami Itō, a detective working in the wards of Tokyo. Your objective is to locate your partner, Hazuki Tanaka. He was reported missing, and you have a clue as to where he went. This leads you to travel to the city's wards while interacting with the locals to collect clues, and the whole time you are doing this, an uncanny feeling starts to set in as you see figures in the dark and hallucinate. However, this is short-lived as you soon can find your partner. After finding him, you see a flashback and are told how your player character messed up and killed a small girl in a hostage situation and had to deal with the consequences of her actions. Then the shit hits the fan.
Tokyo Dark is a slow burn as the horror aspects come naturally into the story. It is a must-play for anime old-school horror anime fans.
Figure 3: CHAOS; HEAD NOAH
Platforms:- (Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, macOS)
Visual novels nowadays follow two types of story formats. One is the one in which the protagonist’s average high school life is uprooted by something new happening. And the second is where everything goes to shit, and the world ends. Chaos; Head Noah is a sort of mix and also the predecessor to both. The original Chaos; Head came out in 2008 and kickstarted the Science Adventure series. Yes, this game, in a way, is the prequel to the events of Steins;Gate.
Takumi is the stereotyped otaku main character that was abundant in the late 2000s. He has a container that he has made into his sanctuary. That is where he lives—playing online games whenever he isn’t going to school, which is as little as possible. He has little interest in anything that isn’t anime or games and may come off as obnoxious at the start. But he is surprisingly well-written. You learn about his past, how he was left alone and how he started to view the world. The major gameplay choices are whether to show Takumi a good delusion or a bad one. This will lead you down many paths in the game.
Chaos; Head Noah is a timeless classic as it takes every stereotype present and uses them to craft one of the best horror visual novel ever.
